Skagit Radio Project
MT. VERNON, WA
Rebecca White, Reporter

Bellingham Americorps Volunteers/Youth Voices Coordinators Jen and Rebecca are now into their sixth week with the Skagit Youth Radio Project—sweet! We are currently facilitating weekly sessions in Mt. Vernon with approximately 10 middle school and high school youth. We are partnering with Carlos Bejar from the KSVR Radio Station to teach aspects of radio (such as Public Service Announcement—PSA—construction; interview techniques; and ultimately production of a radio show) as well to lead community-building exercises for the group. I (Rebecca) am really happy with how this project is going so far! We are working with a good number of kids and they are all enthusiastic about the project. The group is generally getting along well and definitely fun to be with! During our most recent sessions the kids have an opportunity to write and record several PSAs. These have included: waking up on time for school, gangs and violence, parental issues, and improving grades. This group has a lot of potential to do well with this project, and we are excited to be participating with them on it and eagerly anticipate what will come out of our next sessions.
